University Health Care System Respiratory Therapist Registered Full-Time (Nights) in Augusta, Georgia


The Respiratory Therapist uses the cognitive skills of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, and is responsible for conducting discipline specific assessments and provides appropriate treatments/services to patients in accordance with established standards of practice and performance. The RT is responsible for providing education and information to patients, families, staff, and physicians. The Respiratory Therapist will participate in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting the respiratory plan of care for patients. The Respiratory Therapist will perform duties within the constructs of an interdisciplinary patient care team while sharing various tasks with other licensed and non-licensed staff members. Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principals by keeping informed of shared governance activities and fulfilling job duties that assist the unit to achieve unit goals and objectives. Accountability will be monitored through direct observations, financial goal achievement, performance improvement activities, and patient outcomes.The RT is responsible for ensuring the hospital's mission to provide excellent cost efficient patient care to patients of all ages (infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatrics) is achieved. Ensures that legal, professional, and institutional policies, regulations, and standards are met.The Respiratory Therapist may serve as the Team Leader and/or a resource therapist when needed.Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.


EducationMust be a graduate from an AMA approved program of Respiratory Therapy.Level I- Must be a Certified Respiratory Therapist and become registered within 12 months post graduation.Level II - Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist.Level III - Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist and possesses a BS degree.PRN Reg - Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist.Licensure/CertificationMust have a current Georgia license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).BLS is required upon hire or attained during orientation; certification to remain current throughout employment.ACLS and NRP are preferred.ExperienceExperience as a Respiratory Therapist is preferred for hire eligibility but not required.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of respiratory-related growth and development relevant to the ages of all patient populations served.High level of interpersonal skills in order to communicate with patients, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with whom daily interaction must take place.Ability to think critically and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.Knowledge of respiratory diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.Assessment, analytical, and synthesis skills sufficient to interpret and analyze patient health data; identify pulmonary diagnoses; prioritize needs; and develop an individualized respiratory plan of care.Problem solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.Initiative and dependability is required. Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.Ability to use age appropriate teaching concepts to optimize patient health during their hospital stay and thereafter.Physical DemandsStanding for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours)Walking for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours) to include moving about the work area, hospital and/or campus as neededSitting for extended periods (8 to 12 hours)Must be able to bend, stoop and reach/lift above your headSight: must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as items in print or electronically. For Health Care Providers (HCP) must be able to visualize patient condition and see data displayed on monitoring devices, etc.Auditory: must be able to hear in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones, must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc.Tactile: must have ability to handle equipment and/or devices related to job duties, enter documentation within computer system. For HCP must be able to feel for pulses, skin temperature, and other patient conditionsOlfactory: HCP need to be able to smell disease-specific smellsHCP should not manually lift (including transfer, reposition, or move) patients who weigh greater than 35 pounds. The appropriate safe patient handling device will be used, except in emergency situations (life or death situations where delay in obtaining and using the safe patient handling equipment may be detrimental to the patient). Refer to Policy/Procedure G-89Proper body mechanics will be used when moving or lifting any equipment or supplies
