The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) Recreation Therapist in Baltimore, Maryland

Job Descriptions:

SUMMARY With supervision, plans, directs, and coordinates recreation-based programs for students who are visually impaired or blind. This is through the use of a variety of modalities to include but not limited to arts and crafts, drama, music, dance, sports, games, and community integration field trips to maintain and/or improve the students’ physical, social and emotional well-being.


Essential Functions:

  • Assess students through observation, chart reviews, interactions, and conversations with staff and parent/guardian relating to leisure and recreation.

  • Create programs that meet student needs and interest, and lead these programs on a daily basis.

  • Help students develop and learn appropriate social skills.

  • Transition students from MSB to home community programs through community integration.

  • Provides outreach consultation as needed.

  • Manages the on-campus pool.

Marginal Functions:

  • Assists with child care tasks as able and needed.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Performance Standard: Must assure 100% compliance with School and department policies and procedures. Must assure 100% support of all recreation programs.

Work Environment: Multiple indoor and outdoor environments around and off-campus, with varying sound, lighting and temperature conditions.

Work Schedule: 40 afternoon and evening hours Monday through Thursday with daily one-hour unpaid dinner break. Flex time within the week is sometimes required. This position follows a ten month schedule.

Required Experience:


Knowledge, skills, and general abilities:

  1. Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation with direct recreation experience.

  2. Comprehensive knowledge of programming in therapeutic recreation.

  3. General knowledge of planning and coordinating individual and small group activities.

  4. Basic knowledge of programming for students with blindness, visual impairments, and multiple disabilities.

  5. Requires NRPA or MRPA membership, NCTRC certification, and a CDL driver's license.

  6. Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification required; or willingness to obtain within six months of hire.

  7. MSB requires its employees to be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus by the date or hire, with exceptions for approved medical or religious accommodations, in order to safeguard the health of our students, employees and their families from COVID-19 to the greatest extent possible.

After six months in this position, the employee is required to have:

  1. General knowledge of the Schools' organizational structure and operations.

  2. General knowledge and application of departmental responsibilities, philosophies and expectations.

  3. General knowledge of Expanded Core Curriculum.

  4. Comprehensive knowledge of assigned students’ therapeutic recreation needs.

  5. CPR/First Aid Certification.

  6. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training completed.
