Job Summary

The Radiation Therapist is a member of the Radiation Therapy Team, who utilizes his/her technical abilities to simulate and/or deliver a course of radiation therapy as prescribed by a radiation oncology physician.

Essential Functions

  • Administer radiation therapy treatments as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist

  • Complete quality checklist prior to patient’s initial treatment

  • Explain treatment experience and laser safety to patients on their initial treatment and answer questions as needed

  • Verify patient name, date of birth and site and laterality of treatment location by asking the patient daily. Stop procedure and notify Radiation Oncologist of any variances

  • Construct patient immobilization devices as directed by the Radiation Oncologist to establish accurate and reproducible patient treatment portal

  • Fabricate custom bolus devices as directed by the Radiation Oncologist

  • Maintain patient skin markings of treatment portals as appropriate

  • Notifies physician/nurse of any patient concerns or complications

  • Notify Radiation Oncologist of any problems or errors regarding patient treatments

  • Document patient set-ups and treatment fields with appropriate photographs

  • Schedule and complete port localization imaging

  • Maintain computerized electronic patient schedule

  • Perform daily quality control checks on linear accelerators and report any variances to physics

  • Participate in weekly chart rounds and monthly CQI meetings as assigned

  • Recognize and report linear accelerator operational faults to physics

  • Supervise and move patients to and from treatment couch, assuring their safety and comfort and using appropriate techniques and body mechanics

  • Communicate pleasantly with other members of the department, the hospital staff and office personnel in doctors’ offices

  • Protect patient health information at all times

  • Recognize age specific needs of adolescents, adults and geriatric patients and initiate appropriate actions to meet their needs

  • Practice infection control techniques by mandated hand hygiene and cleaning of patient contact equipment

  • Observe universal precautions consistently use personal protective equipment as needed and appropriate

  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of work area

  • Wear clothing and name badge consistent with dress code, and attend to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance

  • Take call duty as needed, assigned by the Radiation Oncology Director.

  • Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission, and abide by the Values of the organization


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • Experience on Elekta linear accelerators, IMPAC oncology management system, Phillips CT-simulator, HDR, and superficial X-ray treatments preferred

  • ASRT - Radiation Therapist within 1 Year required

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required
