SHIFT: 11:00 am – 7:30 pm w/ occasional weekend work

FLORIDA STATE HOSPITAL IS A TOBACCO FREE FACILITY.
All employees of state mental health treatment facilities are required to wear face masks and appropriate protective equipment as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the policy of the Florida Department of Children and Families that any applicant being considered for employment must successfully complete a State and National criminal history check as a condition of employment before beginning employment, and, if applicable, also be screened in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, F.S., and Chapter 408, F.S. Effective July 1, 2007, several changes were made to the laws relating to Veterans’ Preference in employment, as follows:
Preference eligibility no longer expires upon appointment of the eligible person to a position with the State or any political subdivision of the State.
Persons who were previously ineligible for preference because they held or are currently holding a job with a public employer are now eligible to use their veterans’ preference again with all employers covered by State law.
Persons who were previously ineligible for preference because they did not serve during an eligible wartime period, may now be eligible for veterans’ preference if they served during Operation Enduring Freedom (beginning October 7, 2001 to present) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (beginning March 19, 2003 to present).
Basically, this law allows qualified Veterans to claim preference for every job they apply for in the State System. In the past, once you were hired with a State or governmental employer, you could not claim preference for other jobs, such as promotions. Veterans' Preference ensures that qualified Veterans are given consideration in every stage of the hiring process.
Note: Due to the COVID-19 crisis, duties for this position will temporarily include daily management of basic resident care within residential unit areas as needed, assisting with direct care tasks not related to normal Rehabilitation functions until further notice.
This is a skilled professional work involved in planning and providing direct resident services through scheduled therapeutic activities in a large mental health facility. Work involves evaluating programmatic and therapeutic needs, planning appropriate therapeutic services, implementing direct resident services through scheduled session, and ongoing evaluation of services delivered. The incumbent in this position will spend a minimum of 75% of the time performing duties outlined on the official description in a Forensic facility or institution.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Plans, develops, and conducts resident substance disorder treatment by means of Educational Classes and Individual and Group Counseling, utilizing Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and or the Dual Recovery Twelve Step program. Also, provides direct resident services including, but not limited to Psychiatric rehabilitation, Treatment and Enrichment services.
Conducts resident assessments pertaining to (1) resident level of readiness for and ability to benefit from substance disorder services (2) resident input regarding their individual needs, preferences and wants (3) resident overall progress and progress toward accomplishment of treatment objectives (4) resident ability to remain abstinent after discharge (5) special evaluations as required for clinical or legal purposes.
Documents resident substance disorder treatment progress on a monthly basis meeting with residents individually as needed to accomplish Pre-Recovery Plan documentation.
Coordinates with service team members, resident family if necessary, and the resident in mutually (1) identifying their strengths and assets to help build a recovery foundation (2) establishing treatment objectives for resolution of substance disorder issues.
Fulfills duties of being part of the service team by coordinating with staff to help resolve resident problems and needs particularly as they relate to substances, attending special service team meetings when possible, preparing statistical reports as requested, and participating in committee groups as assigned.
Provides pre-discharge counseling to residents, written progress summaries, and discharge recommendations to the service team, documenting the level of substance disorder support that will be needed after discharge.
Participates in individual professional development, Florida State Hospital and Department of Children and Families required training, protocols with supervisor; including observation, reviews, training, and performs other related work as required; such as working with intern.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year (preferable) of professional experience in developmental disabilities, special education, mental health, counseling, guidance, social work, health or rehabilitative programs.
Rehabilitative sciences include: Music Therapy; Therapeutic Recreation; Horticulture Therapy; Art Therapy; Dance therapy; Occupational Therapy
Behavioral Sciences includes: Counseling and Psychology
Other degrees which can be considered include: Criminal Justice, Criminology, Special Education, Social Work, Education (including but not limited to music, vocational, arts, etc.), Human Services , Sociology, Allied Health, Leisure Studies with course work in Therapeutic Recreation, and Other Human Services or Therapeutic Related Degrees, Provided they meet the following criteria in addition to the degree:
Either a minor in psychology or
18 hours of course work specifically related to providing mental health services (to be determined by review of transcript): including but not limited to assessments for individual needs, program planning/development based on needs, counseling, behavioral/abnormal psychology or psychological theories, behavior modification, etc. or
At least one year previous work experience in a mental health related program with experience in assessing individuals for needed services, planning/developing interventions to address individual needs and implementing those services.
A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.
