Wilson County Memorial Hospital District Respiratory Therapist, PRN in Floresville, Texas

Summary Administers respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of Physician and by orders, by performing the following duties.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides bedside respiratory care to patients as assigned by supervisors and given on the physician's written order for both in house and out patient care.

  • Reads orders, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosages.

  • Determines most suitable method of administering inhaled medications, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with Physician's orders.

  • Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, noninvasive ventilators, therapeutic gas administration, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.

  • Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and inhaled medications to patients.

  • Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.

  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assist patients in performing breathing exercises.

  • Performs pulmonary function tests to be used by a Physician for diagnosis.

  • Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimal results to therapy.

  • Consults with Physician in event of adverse reactions.

  • Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and respiratory therapy information.

  • Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.

  • Places a work order in the system when respiratory equipment repairs are needed.

  • Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees, students and other health care personnel.


Education and/or Experience                                                   

Minimum Education: Must have a minimum of an Associate degree from an accredited AMA Respiratory Care program. Minimum Experience- 2 years of respiratory care clinical experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must be registered or certified by the National Board of Respiratory Care

Must possess current state license from the Texas Medical Board

BLS certification required

ACLS certification required

PALS and NRP certification required
