Under supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, administers a program of physical therapy treatments for patients to patients overcome the effects of physical disabilities, impairments, diseases, aging processes, and to aid in improving, restoring and maintaining the patient to former physical capabilities. Regularly communicates with the physical therapists and other medical/allied health personnel throughout all phases of the patient’s therapeutic program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities are performed under the oversight of a licensed Physical Therapist:
-Follows established treatment procedures and observe safety precautions in the application of, but not limited to, the following modalities: heat, cold, light, water, sound, electromagnetic, electrical modalities, tractions, massage, mobilization and therapeutic exercises for patients with neurological, cardio-pulmonary, vascular, orthopedic, medical, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.
-Applies, adjusts and trains patients in the use of assistive devices such as, but not limited to, crutches, canes, walkers, orthotics, prosthetics, wheelchairs and other durable medical equipments.
-As requested by the supervising physical therapist, assist in patient/family education regarding issues of physical therapy to include, but not limited to, their understanding of their diagnosis, functional limitations, treatment regimens, safety issues regarding treatment and performance of treatment activities in the hospital as well as at home.
-Assists the physical therapist in evaluation, testing, and complex procedures.
-Regularly reports verbally and in writing, their observations regarding the patient’s condition, reactions and response to treatment to the appropriate person (MD, PT, RN, etc.) and at team meetings, as necessary to continue a quality treatment program. Always has written documentation countersigned by mentoring therapist. Complete departmental statistical paperwork.
-Maintains an appropriate quantity of supplies and informs therapist as to supplies or equipment needs.
-Participates in planning, organization and conducting of student training programs and departmental in-service. May be assigned to preceptorship to PTA students or may assist in training PTA students.
-Provides Physical therapy /Occupational therapy services on weekends as required by the department.
-Remains informed of current trends in field by reviewing literature, data and attending conferences or training programs in order to meet CME requirements.
-As requested by their mentoring therapist provides work direction to rehabilitation technicians/aides, students and volunteers in their respective assigned areas.
-Cleans and repairs tools and equipment as required. Maintains inventory of physical therapy supplies on a continuous basis.
-Incumbent works under variety of conditions from pleasant to uncomfortable: most areas are air-conditioned; varying level of dust and noise.
-Hazardous conditions may exist in some areas where they may be patients who exhibit unstable, violent or aggressive behavior as well as may be exposed to bio-hazardous substances, such as blood-borne pathogens, through nature of work performed.
-Job requires completion of NYS-approved program for training of physical therapy assistant to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of evaluation and treatments of physical and psycho-social dysfunction, orthotics, prosthetics, anatomy, neurology, physiology and kinesiology at level normally attained via Associate’s Degree as PTA.
-Job requires one-year experience, either through clinical rotations and/or employment preferably in a large-scale healthcare organization.
-Registration/certification with the NYS as a Physical Therapy Assistant required.
-Basic computer skills required for necessary daily patient documentation and scheduling.
-Good level of comprehensive ability required to treat patients effectively, note treatment progress and coordinates therapy among diverse patient areas. Interpersonal skills at good level to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, other health professionals, patients, patients’ families and must be able to communicate effectively when teaching or assisting in teaching students.
