Position Summary:

The purpose of the mental skills coach is to assist patients in optimizing their goals and motivation during and after the rehabilitative process.


Individual Counseling

Individual sessions will be conducted with clients to assist and guide them in using coping skills to address issues that may arise during the recovery period. Initially conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the client’s needs by discussing current concerns, coping strategies and goals. Based on the initial evaluation, a plan is developed and implemented. This plan will deal with post-injury recovery and lifestyle modification that will utilize proper motivation, realistic goal-setting; visualization and self- talk strategies to ensure the best recovery for the athlete. Therapeutic interventions are implemented to address the identified issues. Interventions focus on supportive listening, processing thoughts and emotions, and developing strategies to cope with psychosocial stressors as appropriate as the individual adjusts to medical issues. There will be a variety of techniques and skills taught to ensure the athlete reaches their peak performance. Performs ongoing basic assessments on psychosocial, motivational, and goal setting parameters of care.

Team Communication

Effectively communicates regarding the theory and research of sports psychology and mental skills coaching into the field to educate coaches, athletes, parents, exercisers, fitness professionals, and athletic trainers about the psychological aspects of their sport or activity. Evaluates basic patient/family response to counseling sessions, and identifies concerns/issues and revises plan/session based on patient and/or family response. Communicates to care providers (physical therapists, athletic trainers, physicians, nurses) the patient’s/family’s response to counseling sessions.

Group Counseling

Work with individuals in a group setting to assist and guide them in using coping skills to address psychosocial issues that are common to the participants.


Provider will accurately and thoroughly document the visit within the patients file via e-record.


Facilitates follow up scheduling with patient, family members and front office.


Bachelor's degree with major course work in an appropriate health, social or technical field and 2-3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
