JOB TITLE: Recreation Aide

JOB SUMMARY:Responsible for conducting assigned diversional programs, assisting at large events, completing statistics and decorating as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to run large diversional programs on various units and assist recreation therapists as scheduled. Must be able to push wheelchairs and recliners, move tables and chairs, operate elevator, verbally communicate with residents and staff, manually handle small objects, operate telephone, and use stairways.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. A hands-on approach is necessary to work with residents who are physically frail, disabled, visually impaired and who may have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

  2. Recreation Aides must be able to adapt programs to allow residents of various functioning levels to participate.

  3. Recreation Aides must possess strong communication skills and utilize them in an independent manner to assure that they accurately complete their assigned tasks.

  4. Recreation Aides must work cooperatively with the members of all departments.

  5. Physical requirements including transporting residents in various types of chairs and recliners which can, at times, be heavy and cumbersome. This may also include other medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators and tube feed pumps. Recreation Aides must also move tables and chairs on the dining room for groups, lift activities supplies and equipment and climb ladders to decorate high areas.

  6. Recreation Aides must present a friendly manor at all times to create a warm and caring home like atmosphere for the residents.

  7. Recreation Aides must be flexible and able to accept sudden changes in their schedule when necessary.

  8. The dress code for Recreation Assistants: No jeans, shorts, T-shirts, stretch pants or dirty sneakers will be allowed. Clothes must be clean, neat and appropriate for the workplace.

    EXPERIENCE:Leadership experience in a geriatric setting. Student in a Therapeutic Recreation program a plus. Will consider right candidate.

    LINE OF AUTHORITY: Reports to the Director of Recreational Therapy

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  9. To conduct diversional programs as assigned.

  10. To record daily statistics of each individual residents activities, and participation level.

  11. To rotate as scheduled or needed throughout the building.

  12. To conduct and/or assist recreation therapists at large special events such as birthday parties, entertainment, and holiday events.

  13. To work as part of a team approach on assigned units coordinating with nursing routines, meal service, and other facility activities.

  14. To place decorations on all the units as assigned. Decorations should be coordinated with recreation therapists and/ or the Director of Recreational Therapy and be completed in a timely fashion.

  15. To post the current monthly schedule of Recreation and distribute copies to designated residents as assigned.

  16. To offer and distribute independent recreation resources to rehabilitation patients as directed by recreation therapists and/or Director of Recreational Therapy

  17. To work with volunteers assigned to Recreational Therapy.

  18. To perform any other related duties as deemed necessary or as directed by the Director of Recreational Therapy.
